Research interests: Colloidal Chemistry applied to the synthesis of nanostructured materials, Plasmonic Spectroscopy and Sensing, Surface Chemistry and Self-assembled Monolayers, Metal Nanoparticles.

Brief Bio: After obtaining the B.Sc. (Honors, 2002) and the M.Sc. (2004) degrees on Radiochemistry at the Institute of Applied Science and Technology of Havana (Cuba), YDF joined the Faculty for Nuclear Sciences as a Lecturer on Thermodynamics and Quantum Chemistry. During this period his main research interests had been focused on the Physico-Chemical characterization of non-ionic micellar solutions and the investigation of the effect of additives on the phase behavior of these systems. Also in these years YDF started a collaboration project with Prof. Piersandro Pallavici from the Supramolecular Research Group at University of Pavia, that exploit the complementary expertise of both research groups to develop a new kind of self-assembled fluorescence sensors, based on micellar substrates. Thereafter, YDF received the sponsorship of UNESCO International Center of Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) to join the Supramolecular Research Group at University of Pavia as a Research Fellow of the ICTP-TRIL Program. During 2008 YDF participated in a multidisciplinary research project devoted to the development of new materials for Spintronics applications, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Chemistry and the Department of Physics of University of Pavia. At this point the research background of YDF broadened covering complementary topics, from High-Temperature Material Chemistry to Chemistry of Surfaces. YDF acquire expertise on the synthesis of bulk and nanostructured materials, and on the characterization of these systems with advanced techniques. This period was completed by obtaining the Ph.D. degree on Chemistry at University of Pavia under the supervision of Prof. Pallavicini, giving the final dissertation on “Modification and Functionalization of glass surfaces with antibacterial activity” (2012). After a short post-doc at University of Pavia within Pallavicini’s group, in 2012 YDF joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology as a post-doc within a research project leaded by Prof. Kasper Moth-Poulsen, Prof. Fredrik Westerlund and Prof. Christoph Langhammer and devoted to the development of innovative plasmonic-catalytic nanometric devices. YDF is author of more than 30 scientific papers on high impact-factor journals, and has attended several international scientific meetings.
